Obituary

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Anni Chachel on May 7, 2020, at the age of 97 years. Born in Barbovo, Czechoslovakia, on October 27, 1922, Anni arrived in Canada following the dreadful years of the Second World War in order to start a new life, filled with hope for a brighter future. She settled in Toronto and lived here for 73 years. She always loved to dance, and it was at one such event where she was asked by a gentleman if she would like to dance with him. She must have enjoyed the dances that evening, because the two fell in love and married a short time later. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Nick Chachel. The orchestra is ready for the both of them to once again hit the dance floor together!

Anni was born to Jacob and Katarina Schin and predeceased by her siblings John, Jakob, Katarina, Elizabeth, Maria and Theresia. During her life in Toronto, her siblings, their spouses and children frequently got together to celebrate birthdays, holidays, picnics at Centre Island, and events of all sorts. They were fantastic times with lots of laughter, great discussions, excellent food, and simply the joy of being together. Anni is survived by her two sons and their wives, Chris & Pat Schin and Bob & Beatrice Chachel. Her four grandchildren brought her great joy: Michael and David Schin, and Steven and Amanda Chachel, and yes, she took pleasure in secretly giving them homemade baked treats (but not before supper.)

Anni loved spending time at the family cottage in Wasaga Beach, especially going to the beach with her grandchildren, making sandcastles and playing in the water, then enjoying picnic lunches before bringing the gang back for some rest (hers as well as theirs) before the next big adventure. She loved being around children and treated them as the precious people that they are. Always ready to listen, but not judge; offer advice, but not dictate; help, but not dominate; comfort, but not smother. Anni always treated everyone with kindness, respect and consideration, and this was reflected in their similar treatment of her. Anni was also very strong: saying that in times of difficulty or loss, yes, it's hard, but you have to do your best and keep on going through it. The hurt and pain will be overcome. Certainly her family has only benefited from the beautiful role she has played in our lives.

Anni will be sadly missed by her family, relatives, and the many friends she made during her lifetime. We wish to thank those who provided support, especially during her final days. We also wish to thank the staff at the Village of Humber Heights for their compassion, hard work and loving care. Anni truly felt at home since arriving there.

Due to the current health situation, a private family graveside service will be held. A Celebration of Life is to be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations can be made to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Please visit her Book of Memories at www.wardfuneralhome.com

I have so many fond memories of Anni. We were neighbours for decades. We went to Harvey’s (which she loved) together a few times. I could not compete with her when it came to shovelling the driveway (in her eighties!) Hers was immaculate and mostly done by the time I got out there! She told wonderful stories about when she was young before she came to Canada. I will think of her often.
With sympathy,
Patti

Dear Bob, Bea and family,
My deepest condolences to you on the sad passing of Anni Chachel. I did not meet her very often but remember that she liked to chat and smile. Even though she hardly knew me, we enjoyed some lovely talks.
Love and strength to you duringthis difficult time from overseas, Jeannette and family
